To prevent and combat violence against children, young people and woman

– and to protect victims and groups at risk.

SUNIAGEEL 2

Sunia Geel 2 – Brief project summary

Every minute 14 women in Europe become a victim of domestic violence. According to Human Rights Watch the dark number is much higher. Women and children living in marginalized community are at a especially high risk. Sunia Geel 2 will provide a framework to reduce violence against women and children of marginalized ethnic communities and ensure that their needs for safety and support are met. ”Sunia Geel” derives from the Irish Traveller language, Cant. It translates “take care of yourself”, and is viewed as an apt name for what Sunia Geel II aims to achieve: families being valued and supported.

Target groups include:

- Sinti and Roma in Romania and Italy;

- Muslim migrants in Germany, Austria, Italy and Romania;

- And Travellers in Ireland

The Project will provide an increased understanding of the needs of service users, thus creating the possibility of an improved response. It is critical that women are empowered to make informed and safe choices for themselves and their children. The incidence of domestic violence and intra-family violence will be reduced by promoting a zero tolerance approach within marginalized communities and amongst those delivering social services to ethnic minorities
